Things to Do
This beautiful area of South West Scotland has so much to offer, from the quiet sandy coves and cliff top walks to the many castles, such as Caerlaverock and Drumlanrig. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the area has plenty of beautiful gardens to visit, including Threave Gardens (National Trust) and Logan Botanic Gardens, Scotland’s most exotic garden. The Galloway forest park is home to many walks and mountain bike trails as well as being the first Dark Sky Park in Europe. A stay here would not be complete without taking a drive along the coast and a wander round the little seaside villages of Southerness, Rockcliffe and Kippford. Mersehead and Caerlaverock nature reserves are a must for bird watchers and nature lovers
Steeped in history, the area has many castles such as Drumlanrig and Caerlaverock, where the barnacle geese can be seen at the wetlands centre. The Southern Upland Way and Annandale Way pass through the countryside.
If you love poetry, you may want to visit Robert Burns’ house, mausoleum, or Dumfries museum. Dumfries is renowned worldwide as the birthplace of Peter Pan, and visitors can lose themselves in the fantasy world of storytelling, if they take a trip to Moat Brae.
East Lodge is just 1 mile from the heart of Mabie Forest, where you can enjoy a variety of activities including many varied walking trails and the world-class 7Stanes mountain biking centre.
For more information on the 7Stanes visit the website here: https://forestryandland.gov.scot/visit/activities/mountain-biking/7stanes
Your little ones are also well catered for with outdoor play areas nearby, and of course your four-legged friends have masses of walks to enjoy too. Another must for your children is a visit to Mabie Farm Park, which is nestled just below Mabie Forest, where you can feed the animals and see the Belted Galloways, Alpacas, Llamas and much more. Dalscone Farm Fun has indoor soft play, loads of outdoor activities and a large toy shop.
For the golf enthusiasts there are many local courses including the Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club, the historic Dumfries and County Golf Club, Thornhill, Lochmaben Golf Club and the Southerness Championship Links Course to name but a few.
We have equipped the cottage with plenty of board games and reading material for those of you who need some stress free down time indoors as well.
